Cascade stages another upset

EVERETT – The young Cascade Bruins have apparently got over their early season heartaches and grown up fast.

With four sophomore starters and a freshman as the first player off the bench the Bruins took some early season lumps against their Western Conference North division foes, including four close losses.

After winning Tuesday on Mike Matson’s buzzer beater at Oak Harbor, Cascade followed up by storming past Stanwood 68-51 Friday for its third-straight victory.

“The kids are peaking right now, gaining confidence and playing well,” Cascade coach Kevin Rohrich said.

The score was tied at 39-39 at the end of the third quarter. Stanwood edged ahead 45-42, but Cascade answered by sinking 18 of 21 free throws in the final quarter to pull away from the Spartans.

“When Stanwood took the lead, the kids kept their composure,” Rohrich said. “Stanwood’s not a bad team, we just really played well.”

After finishing last season with an overall record of 1-19, the surging Bruins (5-9 in division, 8-10 overall) remain alive for a district playoff berth.

Cascade’s Dirk Snel led all scorers with 20 points and Marcus Guffey added 18. The pair combined to make 15 of 17 free throws in the pivotal fourth quarter. Drew Pettersen added 15 points.

Guffey, a 6-foot-7 inch sophomore forward, grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Bruins out-rebound the Spartans 28-19.

“That was really a key to the game, the inside play,” Rohrich said. “He (Guffey) is a good player and he’s got a chance to be pretty special.”

Another key to the victory was Matson’s defensive effort against Stanwood’s Daes Kaufman, limiting the Spartans most prolific scorer to nine points.

“He played great defense the whole game,” Rohrich said.

Chris Sains and Richard Abrams led Stanwood with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
