Students at Glacier Peak High School in Snohomish might see Grizzlies freshman Amy-Eloise Neale in the halls and have no concept of her fantastic running ability, Glacier Peak cross country coach Dan Parker said last week while addressing the school’s students during a pep assembly.
But students who are in gym class with Neale, said Parker, and ran a timed mile this fall certainly discovered Neale’s special talents.
In her first year at Glacier Peak, Neale was named the Gatorade Washington Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. Introduced by coach Parker, Neale received her Gatorade trophy on Feb. 3 during a spirited assembly in the second-year school’s gym.
Besides recognizing Neale, Glacier Peak also celebrated lineman John Froland’s signing with the Colorado State University football program.
It was quite a pep assembly. There were several skits, including a few funny scenes featuring student actors who portrayed goofy elderly folks; an exhibition wrestling match between Derek Van Wyhe and Joe Bratz in the center of the gym; and an ultra-enthusiastic crowd-participation dance (at 9 a.m., no less!) to the Black Eyed Peas song “I Gotta Feeling.”
As I scanned the gym, every single person I saw — students, teachers, administrators — was doing the same choreographed moves to the catchy tune.
It looked a little bit like this.
