Glacier Peak football player John Froland receives offer from Northwestern

I know, I know — it’s not football season. But that doesn’t mean there is a complete absence of gridiron-related news.

For instance, I talked to Glacier Peak football coach Rory Rosenbach today. He was thrilled to tell me that one of his players, junior lineman John Froland, received a scholarship offer from Northwestern University.

Froland, who currently throws shot put and discus for the Glacier Peak track and field team, has not verbally committed to Northwestern, Rosenbach said. But this could be the beginning of an exciting recruiting process for the burly 6-foot-5, 250-pound lineman.

An Associated Press Class 3A all-state football honorable mention this past fall, Froland played offensive left tackle and defensive tackle for Glacier Peak, helping the team advance to the playoffs and go 5-5 in its inaugural season.

Froland has the ability to play on either side of the ball in college, coach Rosenbach said, but most recruiters want him for defense.

Northwestern became interested in Froland based on a highlight video Glacier Peak coaches sent to the Big-10 team’s staff, Rosenbach said. Froland hopes to visit Northwestern’s campus in Evanston, Ill., this summer, the coach said.

Froland and other Class of 2010 prep football players can make a verbal commitment any time. But they can’t sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent until February of next year.
