The Snohomish High School girls lacrosse team didn’t take long to mold itself into a champion.
Just two years removed from a winless season, Snohomish won the Varsity B Division state title on Saturday with an 11-9 victory over top-seeded Lake Sammamish at Mercer Island Stadium.
Snohomish pulled away from an 8-8 tie late in the game with goals by Keena Hopkins, Haley Slind and Brielle Hargrave.
Hopkins finished the contest with six goals and two assists. Slind added two goals and two assists. Hargrave, Shayla Whipple and Whitney Blanchet also scored for the winners.
Goalie Danielle Bergquist made 27 saves.
“This is a team with only six returning varsity players from last year,” Snohomish coach Sean Collins said in an e-mail. “In two years this team has gone from winning no games to the state champs. They’re incredible kids.”
Six Snohomish players were named first-team all-league. The group included Whipple, Hopkins, Slind, Sayre Creighton, Jennifer Courtney and Sarah Courtney.
