Lake Stevens stages upset

LAKE STEVENS – Lake Stevens made itself a district playoff contender with its second win in as many nights Saturday.

The Vikings had a huge fourth quarter (23 points) to beat second-place Stanwood 59-51 and solidify their place among the top four teams in the Wesco North.

Brett Dvorak hit a key 3-point goal with 1:19 to play to expand a one-point lead to four and force Stanwood to foul.

Evan Steinruck, who had 10 rebounds for Lake Stevens, shot 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and scored nine of his 21 points in the fourth period.

The Vikings held Stanwood star Derek Anderson, who had only one field goal in the game, to 10 points.

Lake Stevens also caused 21 Stanwood turnovers.

Oak Harbor 47, Cascade 45: At Everett, Marshall Lobbestael hit a 3-point shot with 40 seconds to go to put Oak Harbor up for good in the Wesco North game. Cascade’s leading scorer, Dirk Snel (22 points), was fouled shooting a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but missed the second free throw to end the game. Rodrick Rumble led the Wildcats with 20 points.

Karsten Strieby of Mountlake Terrace led all scorers with 14 points. Junior Andrew Beatty led Lynnwood with 13 points, eight of which came in the fourth quarter.

Tulalip Heritage 79, Lopez Island 60: At Tulalip, Lesjar McKinney led all scorers with 28 points. Antonio Johnson wasn’t far behind with 22 points. And Jordan Wasko added 14 points, five steals and five rebounds to lead Tulalip Heritage, which took sole possession of first place in the Northwest 1B League, to its ninth straight win. Jordan Smith led Lopez Island with 16 points.
