Not pretty, but Monroe in tie for first place in North

Herald staff

MONROE – Luckily for the Monroe boys soccer team the game of soccer awards teams more for hard work than for style.

And at no time was this more evident than at Monroe Stadium Wednesday night when the Bearcats (10-1-2 in league and overall) defeated Marysville-Pilchuck 3-1 to move into a tie with Snohomish for first place in the Western Conference North standings.

Behind two Brett Walsh goals, Monroe used a scrappy offense, an aggressive defense and good goalkeeping by Ben Dragavon to defeat the Tomahawks.

“In games like (Wednesday’s) we won’t win a lot of style points,” said Monroe coach Paul Hurme, “But rather we mostly have guys who work really hard and are first to the ball.”

The first evidence of Monroe’s hard-nosed attack came in the game’s 11th minute on Walsh’s first goal. Walsh banged in a ball that was bouncing all over the place, while surrounded by Tomahawk defenders swiping at his legs.

After Marysville-Pilchuck tied the game at 1, Monroe’s Coby Knox scrambled for a loose ball and scored a minute later.

Up 2-1 after halftime, Monroe’s attacking defense took over and didn’t allow Marysville-Pilchuck another goal the rest of the night.

Just to prove that Monroe does have a little style, Walsh knocked in his second goal of the night on a cross from Brian Gullikson.
