Prep baseball state tournament capsules

A look at all six local teams competing in state tournament games on Saturday.

Six local high school baseball teams remain standing with round-of-16 and quarterfinal state tournament games taking place at various sites across the state Saturday.

Jackson is the lone local representative at the 4A tournament, as is Archbishop Murphy in 2A. Edmonds-Woodway, Shorewood, Mountlake Terrace and Monroe make up one-quarter of the remaining 3A field.

The 4A and 3A state semifinals and championships take place next Friday and Saturday at Funko Field in Everett. The 2A state semifinals and championships are Friday and Saturday at Joe Martin Stadium in Bellingham.

Here’s a look a look at the locals teams:

CLASS 4A

Jackson

The seventh-seeded Timberwolves matchup with 10th-seeded Federal Way in the first round at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heritage Park in Puyallup. The winner advances to a quarterfinal game later in the day against the winner of 15th-seeded Hanford vs. second-seeded Puyallup. Jackson’s offense features a trio of players hitting .380 or better. Senior Micah Coleman (.387) has seven doubles and 20 RBI, senior Evan Mothersbaugh (.384) has nine doubles and 14 stolen bases and senior Ryan Nakajima (.380) has three doubles, a home run and 20 RBI. Senior Braden O’Donnell has posted a .511 on-base percentage with six doubles, 32 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. Sophomore Sam Craig sports a 1.86 earned-run average over 30 innings pitched with 35 strikeouts, junior Chase Halvorsen is 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA and 44 strikeouts over 34.2 innings and senior Kellan Johns is 3-0 with 28 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA over 25.2 innings. Johns threw a no-hitter this season and Halvorsen pitched five innings of a combined no-hitter. Jackson won the Wesco 4A title and is making its first state appearance since 2018. Potential quarterfinal opponent Puyallup was the state runner-up in 2022 and has made 14 consecutive trips to state.

CLASS 3A

Edmonds-Woodway

The sixth-seeded Warriors take on 11th-seeded Southridge in the round of 16 1 p.m. Saturday at Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle. The winner advances to a quarterfinal tilt later in the day against the winner of 14th-seeded Stadium vs. third-seeded West Seattle. Senior ace Dylan Schlenger is 9-0 with a 0.56 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 62 innings pitched and has tossed five shutouts. Senior Jens Simonsen is 4-2 with a 2.29 ERA and 44 strikeouts over 36.2 innings pitched. He pitched a no-hitter in the district semifinals. Simonsen has also driven in 18 runs and stolen eight bases. Senior Drew Warner has a 1.75 ERA over 28 innings and is hitting .367 with 14 RBI and seven stolen bases. Junior Diego Escandon has a team-high seven extra-base hits and is hitting .333 with 17 RBI and eight stolen bases. Junior Thomas Shults has a team-high .382 batting average with two doubles and 10 RBI. The Warriors won the Wesco 3A/2A South title, the 3A District 1 title and are making their fifth straight trip to state, which includes back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2017-18. Potential quarterfinal opponent West Seattle reached the state semifinals and placed fourth last spring.

Shorewood

The 12th-seeded Stormrays face fifth-seeded Timberline in the round of 16 4 p.m. Saturday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. The winner advances to a quarterfinal matchup against the winner of 13th-seeded Mountlake Terrace vs. fourth-seeded Lake Washington later in the day. Washington-bound senior ace Logan Anderson is 5-0 with 0.49 ERA and 89 strikeouts over 57 innings pitched. Opposing batters are hitting just .150 against Anderson. Junior Jacob Lindberg has a 1.02 ERA with 28 strikeouts over 27.1 innings. Senior Blake Gettman has a 3-1 record with a 3.27 ERA over 30 innings and has added 12 RBI at the plate. Senior Rory Swanson has a team-high eight extra-base hits, nine stolen bases and is hitting .347 with a .940 on-base plus slugging. Junior Noah Fahey is hitting .310 with three extra-base hits and 12 RBI. Shorewood is making its fifth state tournament appearance since 2014 and is seeking its first win at state since placing second in 2015.

Mountlake Terrace

The 13th-seeded Hawks (16-10) take on fourth-seeded Lake Washington in the round of 16 1 p.m. Saturday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. The winner advances to a quarterfinal contest later in the day against the winner of 12th-seeded Shorewood vs. fifth-seeded Timberline. Junior Talan Zenk is hitting .418 with 22 RBI and 26 runs scored, junior Bede Bresee is batting .334 with 12 RBI and 12 runs scored and senior Rominic Quiban is hitting .330 with 13 RBI and 15 runs scored. Senior Tyler Song has a 3-2 record with a 1.68 ERA while holding opponents to a .214 batting average, and junior Dayton Nickolson is 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA while holding opponents to a .214 batting average. Mountlake Terrace reached the 3A District 1 title game and is making its second straight state appearance and third in the past four postseasons. The Hawks beat 20th-seeded Auburn Riverside 13-3 in the opening round Tuesday. Round-of-16 opponent Lake Washington was a quarterfinalist last season and has reached the title game in three of the past sevens state tournaments, including championship victories in 2019 and 2016.

Monroe

The 15th-seeded Bearcats (19-6) matchup with second-seeded Lincoln (Seattle) in the round of 16 10 a.m. Saturday at Bellevue College. The winner advances to a quarterfinal tilt later in the day against the winner of 10th-seeded Liberty (Renton) vs. seventh-seeded Bainbridge Island. Senior Rylan Hampton is batting a team-best .353 with five extra-base hits and 17 RBI, junior Harlan Rowe is hitting .346 and has team highs with 10 extra-base hits and 20 RBI, and senior Parker Mann is hitting .339 with eight extra-base hits and 17 RBI. Rowe has also posted a 5-2 record on the mound with a 3.03 ERA and 50 strikeouts over 39.1 innings. Senior Connor Campbell sports a 3-1 record and 2.21 ERA over 38 innings and senior Carter Sprague has a 3-0 record with a 2.48 ERA and 39 strikeouts over 42.1 innings. This is Monroe’s first state tournament appearance since 2019 and the third overall for the program since 1990. The Bearcats picked up their first win in a state tournament game since 1977 with a 6-1 win over Silas in the opening round Tuesday. Round-of-16 opponent Lincoln, a quarterfinalist last season, features one of the state’s top senior recruits in Auburn-bound lefty starter Bjorn Johnson.

CLASS 2A

Archbishop Murphy

The 10th-seeded Wildcats (12-12) square off with seventh-seeded Mark Morris in the first round at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wheeler Field in Centralia. The winner advances to the quarterfinals to face the winner of 15th-seeded Grandview vs. second-seeded Tumwater later in the day. Sophomore Reese Logsdon is hitting .302 with seven stolen bases and freshman Henry Gabalis is hitting .273 with eight extra-base hits and six stolen bases. Logsdon has a 5-3 record on the mound with a 2.53 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 49.2 innings, junior Tommy Zook is 4-4 with a .252 ERA over 41.2 innings and sophomore Cole McCourt is 1-0 with three saves and 24 strikeouts over 17.2 innings. Archbishop Murphy is in the state tournament for the third consecutive season, which includes a third-place finish in 2019, and has won its first-round game in six of its past seven appearances. Potential quarterfinal opponent Tumwater is the defending state champion.
