Prep swimming: 5 swimmers to watch

Eben Schumann | Sr. | Kamiak

Schumann placed third in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles at last season’s Class 4A state meet. His time of 21.30 minutes in the 50 is a Kamiak school record.

And Kamiak coach Chris Erickson said Schumann could be even better this season.

“He’s been lifting weights throughout the year, and he’s bigger and stronger,” Erickson said. “He looks like he’s about 6-foot-3 and 215 (pounds). He looks like a linebacker.”

As good as he is, Schumann is not a clear-cut favorite for the best swimmer on his own team. Teammate Shelby Lee, who placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (one place behind Schumann) and ninth in the 100 backstroke at state last season, is swimming very well.

“He’s really versatile,” Erickson said of Lee. “He can really do anything. I’m going to be excited to watch both of them.”

Chase Reid | Sr. | Lake Stevens

As a junior last year, Reid placed fifth in diving at the Class 4A state meet. He should be in the hunt for a state title this season.

“The sky is the limit for Chase,” first-year Vikings coach Brady Dykgraaf wrote in an e-mail. “He’s such a dedicated athlete, and I am excited to see him compete this year. He has a really good shot at that state title and I know he wants it.

“What is great about Chase is how versatile he is as a swimmer and diver. He has qualified for state in the 100 back two years in a row, and we hope to see him in a relay or two at state this year also. He should be busy come February 21st in Federal Way (site of the state meet), and I can’t wait to see what he can accomplish.”

Nicholas Lavigne | Jr. |Glacier Peak

As a sophomore last season, Lavigne swam to a seventh-place finish in the Class 3A state meet in the 100 butterfly (52.91).

Grant Heisey | Jr. | Shorecrest

Heisey raced to a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:38.70) at the Class 3A state meet last season. He also placed 10th in the 200 individual medley (1:57.76). Heisey will aim for a state championship this season, but it will be in the 2A classification as Shorecrest dropped down from 3A at the start of the 2014-15 school year.

Stephen Boden | Sr. | Archbishop Murphy

Boden was one of three individual state champions for the Class 2A Wildcats last season and he won twice, capturing the 200 individual medley (1:52.01) and 500 freestyle (4:34.81), both with All-American consideration times.
