Seahawks sign Sean Morey

The Seahawks just announced the signing of WR Sean Morey, a special teams standout who spent the last three seasons in Arizona. Morey, 34, was an alternate for the Pro Bowl last season.

Morey isn’t exactly a splashy signing, but playmakers on special teams can be difference makers over the course of a season, and he has proven to be that during his career. It’s only a bonus for the Seahawks that they got better on special teams by taking a player from division rival Arizona.

Morey’s name may sound familiar to casual fans for another reason, namely his outspoken stance on concussions. Morey is one of three current NFL players—a group that includes Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu—who has agreed to donate his brain to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University. For more on what the CSTE does, as well as the involvement of former Seahawk Isaiah Kacyvenski, here’s a story from last summer on the topic.

Here’s the release from the team on the signing:

SEAHAWKS SIGN SPECIAL TEAMS STANDOUT MOREY

Renton, Wash. – The Seattle Seahawks signed wide receiver Sean Morey to a multi-year contract, the team announced this afternoon.

A key contributor on punt and kickoff coverage, Morey was named to Peter King’s All-Decade team as a special teamer. He has been named special teams captain four times during his career and was named to the 2008 Pro Bowl after leading the Arizona Cardinals with 22 special teams tackles. Morey earned NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors in week six after blocking a punt in overtime against the Dallas Cowboys that was recovered and returned for a game-winning touchdown by Monty Beisel.

Last season, Morey was selected as an alternate for the Pro Bowl after recording 19 special teams tackles. The 34-year-old has led his team in special teams tackles five times in seven full NFL seasons.

Morey comes to Seattle after spending three seasons with Arizona. Originally drafted by New England with the 35th pick in the seventh round (241st overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft, Morey spent the majority of his first two seasons on the Patriots practice squad before signing with Philadelphia during the 2001 postseason (1/8/02).

Morey has played in 109 games, registering 11 receptions for 168 yards while adding 151 specials tackles.
