Why ease into the girls basketball season when you can kick-start it with a huge matchup?
That’s the approach for the Snohomish Panthers and the Auburn Riverside Ravens, who will open the 2008-09 season tomorrow night with what should be an exciting non-league game at the Snohomish High gym.
Snohomish and Auburn Riverside are both considered Class 4A state title contenders. They are ranked 19th and 10th, respectively, in the Nov. 5 ESPN RISE West Region preseason girls basketball rankings. The only other Washington team in the top 20 is No. 15 Kennedy of Burien.
I got a voice message last night from first-year Auburn Riverside head coach Ed Rosin. He answered some questions I e-mailed to him yesterday. In his message, Rosin said of Snohomish, “I know they’re going to be a good team. They’re well-coached and disciplined in the half court.”
Responding to a question about trying to defend versatile Snohomish forward Katie Benson, Rosin said Benson is a fine player and he hopes that the Ravens’ help-side defense can neutralize her or at least keep her in check.
