SULTAN – The Sultan Turks boys soccer team stayed undefeated with a 3-0 shutout of the previously undefeated Lakewood Cougars Thursday in a key North Cascades Conference game.

Sultan (8-0 in league and overall) took sole possession of first place in the league with the victory.

Lakewood (7-1, 7-1) dropped its first game of the season.

In the 34th minute, Sultan’s Brayton Knapp scored the first of his two goals from 30 yards out and then scored again in the 47th minute to give the Turks a commanding 2-0 lead.

“Brayton played well today,” Sultan coach Mark Raney said.

Turk goalkeeper Vern Nelson recorded the shutout, stuffing all 10 of Lakewood’s shots on goal.

“Vern had a great game,” Raney said.
