Wood retailers and state officials recommend you take these steps when ordering firewood:

  • Don’t pay until you measure the amount. A pickup bed with loosely piled wood may not measure out to a full cord, which is 128 cubic feet: 4-by-4-by-8 feet.

  • If you pay top price for seasoned wood, make sure it has been properly dried and is ready to burn.

  • Plan ahead. You can usually save a lot of money by ordering wood in the spring. It may not be ready to burn until fall, but you might not need it until then.
