Bishop Murphy wins shootout

LA CONNER – It took awhile to earn it on Monday, but the Archbishop Murphy boys soccer team defeated Grace Academy 2-1 to head to the Class A/B tri-district playoffs as the third seed.

Grace Academy (13-5) will face the loser of the Lopez-La Conner game on Wednesday for the fifth and final seed for tri-districts, which begin Friday.

After double overtime, the Wildcats (11-6 overall) edged Grace Academy in a shootout. Archbishop Murphy’s John Wilcox knocked in the winning penalty kick to seal the victory.

“We played well,” said Archbishop Murphy coach Russ Luteyn. “It was a good game.”

Archbishop Murphy’s Andrew Hewitt was the first to score in regulation, knocking in a goal in the first half.

Grace Academy’s Kevin Poirier tied the score with a goal in the final minutes, sending the game into overtime.

Archbishop Murphy’s goalkeeper was Richard Albo. Grace Academy’s was Josh Stocks.

  • Lynden Christian 3, Granite Falls 0: At Lynden Christian H.S., Lynden Christian (8-0 in league, 12-0 overall) defeated Granite Falls 15-7, 15-2, 15-12 at the North Cascade Conference game. Granite Falls’ Denise Wilbur had 13 kills and Ashley Quinn had 19 assists. Granite Falls (4-4, 9-5) is in a three-way tie for fourth place. The Tigers will face either Mount Baker or South Whidbey today at Sedro-Woolley High School for the tiebreaker.

  • Meridian 3, Sultan 0: At Meridian H.S., Emily Castro had nine kills to help lead Meridian to the 15-1, 15-0, 15-2 North Cascades Conference victory. Meridian (7-1, 10-4) will head to the Class 2A bi-districts on Saturday. Sultan is 0-7, 0-14.
