Fire started by lantern damages L. Stevens home

LAKE STEVENS — A fire that apparently was started by a kerosene lantern caused an estimated $190,000 damage to a Lake Stevens-area home and its contents.
Snohomish County deputy fire marshal Ed Hardesty said the blaze was in a home at 5824 83rd Ave. NE. It started in the laundry area on the main floor and apparently burned for some time.
The home’s owners were away and discovered the fire just before 1 a.m. Saturday when they returned, Hardesty said. Fire District 8 firefighters extinguished the blaze quickly, but there was severe smoke damage throughout the house, he said.
The lantern apparently was lit because of last week’s storm and power outage. It apparently had been placed too close to combustible materials, Hardesty said.
A dog and cat died in the blaze.
Brett A. Waslenko, 28, suffered head, neck and back injuries in the 2:41 a.m. crash, which occurred when the truck drifted across the carpool lane and struck a guardrail, the Washington State Patrol reported.
