YAKIMA – Unbeaten West Valley of Yakima scored with three minutes remaining to beat Jackson 2-1 in a Class 3A state soccer tournament game Saturday.

West Valley improved its record to 22-0 while Jackson fell to 13-8-1.

“We were definitely in the game,” Jackson coach Mike Bartley said. “We were starting to dominate when they caught us on a counter offensive, got a corner (kick) and scored on the corner kick.”

In the first half, West Valley took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute. Jackson tied the scored on Aaron Moore’s goal in the 30th minute.

Jackson was playing without two of its starters, twins Kris and Kory Pope, and reserve Sterling Flunder. The three had the miss the game to be with their state select team at the Olympic development program in California this weekend.

The outcome might have been different had those three played, Bartley said.

“I don’t want to make excuses because we really played well,” Bartley said. “But you never know. We gave everything we had but just came up a little short.”
