Arlington

Seniors offer chicken dinner

Folks who are tired of turkey can join the Stillaguamish Senior Center for an old-fashioned chicken dinner 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the center, 18308 Smokey Point Blvd.

Edmonds

Council members will be honored

The city will host a reception honoring retiring City Council members Dave Earling and Lora Petso.

The event will be 7 p.m. Dec. 16 in City Council chambers, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

Earling served on the City Council for 12 years and lost his bid to become Snohomish County executive against Aaron Reardon in the Nov. 4 election.

Petso served on the council for four years and was defeated in her bid for re-election by Peggy Pritchard Olson, who will begin her term Jan. 1.

Everett

Paramedic lauded for Iraq service

Mayor Ray Stephanson Wednesday presented a U.S. flag to a fire department paramedic who served in Iraq.

Joe Paterniti was in the Navy reserves when he was called into active service in March. He served for several months with the Marine Corps in Iraq.

“It’s really great to be back home,” Paterniti said after Stephanson gave him the flag, which had flown over the U.S. Capitol at the request of U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash.

Paterniti has been with the fire department since 1992.

Three other city employees who served in Iraq received flags in September.

Lynnwood

Second meeting set for new park

Lynnwood officials have set a workshop for planning the proposed 33rd Place West Neighborhood Park 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Spruce Primary School Library, 17405 Spruce Way.

The meeting will give neighbors a chance to join in the planning process. This is the second of three public meetings for the park. Final design will then be recommended to the City Council. For more information, call 425-744-6478.

Mill Creek

New signal comes to Dumas Road

A new traffic signal on Dumas Road at the Heatherwood Apartments entrance is being installed and is expected to be in operation Tuesday, Mill Creek officials said.

The signal is being installed as part of the Heatherwood project by the developer. Installation began Nov. 14, and the road will be restriped when weather permits.

Monroe

Holidays to light up downtown

Monroe’s holiday celebration, “Light Up Monroe,” will be all day Saturday on Main Street in the city’s historic downtown.

There will be shopping, sales and refreshments all day. Santa will arrive at 5 p.m. for the city tree lighting, and the first 50 children to visit him can have their picture taken for free.

Also, if you bring a canned item for the Sky Valley Food Bank, your name will be entered in a special drawing for coupons from downtown merchants.

Parks, arts panel cancels meeting

The Mukilteo Parks and Arts Commission has canceled its next meeting.

The meeting had been set for 7 p.m. next Thursday in the multipurpose room at Fire Station 3, 10400 47th Place W.

The Kla Ha Ya Days Festival Committee has set the date for next year’s event for July 8-12. “Summertime and It’s Hoppin’ in Snohomish” will be the theme.

Whidbey Island

Security work at naval station

Security improvements on four gates at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station begins next week, and the four main gates to Ault Field will be temporarily closed.

Construction starts Wednesday on the yearlong project when the Charles Porter Gate is to be closed to traffic. The gate will reopen for passenger vehicles only Dec. 8. Commercial vehicles must use the Hoffman Road gate off Highway 20.

Nortz Gate will close Dec. 8 and stay closed until mid-February. Langley Gate work is planned for mid-March, and construction on Saratoga Gate is scheduled to begin in the summer.
