LAKE STEVENS – The Lake Stevens Vikings began their quest for another league title Tuesday night, opening the season with a 43-18 victory over the Stanwood Spartans in a Western Conference North Division meet.
Last season Lake Stevens edged Stanwood by a single point. But with Blake Tate (145 pounds) and Derek Carter (125) picking up key wins and freshman Kelly Kubec (103) winning with four seconds remaing in his match, the Vikings won more comfortably this season.
“It was good,” Lake Stevens coach Brent Barnes said about the meet. “We have a long way to go, we’re pretty young right now. We knew Stanwood would come in and wrestle us tough.
“We’re pleased with our younger guys for the most part, but the veteran guys need to get going.”
Clint Osborn added a second-period pin at 275 for Lake Stevens.
Stanwood was led by Chris Mather, who had a first-period pin at 119, and Will Smith, who had a third-period pin at 152.
