Murphy freshman ties school record for 3-pointers

EVERETT – In a battle between two of the top small-school guards in the county, it was the freshman who came out ahead of the senior Tuesday night.

Archbishop Murphy freshman Krista Eknes scored 21 points and kept Darrington star senior Amy Jones in check, leading the Wildcats to a 57-52 victory over the Loggers in a non-league contest between a pair of undefeated teams.

Eknes tied a school record with five 3-point goals and held Jones to three field goals. Eknes nailed three of those treys in the first quarter as the Wildcats jumped out to a 21-9 lead.

“That was a big showdown and Krista came out on top,” Archbishop Murphy coach Bill Kelley said.

“Amy Jones is an outstanding player, but we think Krista is the best freshman guard around,” Kelley added. “We told her to go at her. We didn’t use any combination defenses and we have several of those we can run. We really wanted Krista getting the experience of going against a fine player like Amy.”

Sophomore Lisa Coate also set a Wildcats record, pulling down 22 rebounds. She added 15 points, six assists, six steals and four blocked shots.

Jones was 11-for-16 from the free-throw line to finish with 17 points. Eliza Schillhammer added 16 points for the Loggers.
