Lakewood wrestlers beat Arlington

ARLINGTON – Despite its small size, Lakewood is certainly no David to the local wrestling Goliaths.
Year after year, the Class 2A Cougars from the North Cascades Conference field a team competitive for any size. Lakewood hit the road Monday night and bolstered its reputation, knocking off Class 4A Arlington 46-21 in a non-conference meet.
“I knew that they had some real tough kids,” Arlington coach Jim Smoots said. “We had a couple (Lakewood) guys on their back, then they kind of came back and got the momentum.”
Brothers Jamie (103 pounds) and Josh Hoffman (119) both won by decision for Lakewood, as did brothers Steve (112) and Joe Edmonds (135).
“They have a great developmental program,” Smoots said of Lakewood, which won nine of the 14 matches, including four by pin.
Senior Kurt Gudde (140) and sophomore James Spear (145) had impressive pins for Arlington, Smoots said.
