Holloway leads Lake Stevens to win over Cascade

LAKE STEVENS – The Lake Stevens girls basketball team found out very quickly Wednesday how to disarm Cascade’s pressure defense: Get the ball to Katie Holloway early and often.
The 6-foot, 3-inch senior center scored 20 points, eight points in the first quarter, and dominated the Bruins’ front line with 14 rebounds and five blocks in the Vikings’ 58-43 Wesco North win Wednesday.
“We were able to reverse the ball early on in our press break and get the ball down to Katie with a two on one,” said first-year Lake Stevens coach Tom Tri.
The result was a 15-4 run to start the game and a 31-14 lead at the break.
The Vikings improved to 4-0 overall by winning their league opener Wednesday. Cascade fell to 1-1 in league, 2-2 overall.
Tri scouted Cascade’s 20-point win over Marysville-Pilchuck last week and made sure his team had a plan for the Bruin pressure.
He credited point guard Brittni Estes with steadying the team throughout the game.
“She had six assists and she just made great decisions all night with their press.”
Holloway and sophomore forward Kiana Fisher, who had 12 points, took over from there.
Cascade post Kristi Auckland was held to just three free throws in the first half and finished with 16 points.
Lake Stevens freshman Ashley Housden spearheaded the Vikings perimeter defense, swiping six steals.

Shorewood 50, Mariner 39: Shorewood’s Stephanie West scored a game-high 15 points. Mariner’s Shaniya Moore and Danielle Greavy each scored 11 to lead the Marauders. Shorewood ended the game with a balanced comeback, aided in part by Mariner’s 30 percent shooting from the field, for its first victory of the season.
