A new contest is being added to the Marysville Strawberry Festival, and even Marysville
mayor Dennis Kendall is going to participate.
On Saturday, a brand-new strawberry shortcake eating contest is being held at Asbery
Field. Contestants must gobble large pyramids of strawberry shortcake in a five minute
period without using their hands. Children are faced with a single layer cake.
The entry fee for this event is $5 for teens or adults and $2 for children. Contestants can
exchange canned food donations (of at least $1 value) to cover $1 of the entry fee.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Marysville Food Bank.
The contest starts at 1 p.m. for ages 5 to 7. Age categories continue up to the Adult’s
Open at 2:30 p.m., followed by sponsored challenges at 3 p.m. Spectators are encouraged
to fill the bleachers and cheer them on.
Other great competitions at this year’s festival include the Friday evening Adult Trike
Races, Saturday morning’s Berry Run and, of course, the Biringer Farm Slurp and Burp
Strawberry Shortcake eating contest out at the farm. It also benefits the Marysville Food
Bank.
Children have an additional chance to win an award by entering the Marysville
Performing Arts Centre Kiddies Parade. Specifically for children ages 13 and under, the
event takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, prior to the Grand Parade. Free registration
begins outside the Marysville Junior High School office at 5 p.m.
