Arlington

Free flights at airport event

Arlington will celebrate Arlington Airport Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the airport’s east entrance, 18204 59th Drive NE.

Free flights will be available, weather permitting, to kids ages 7 to 18 through the Young Eagles Program. Preference will be given to first-time flyers. Parental permission is required.

Poker and Paws Walk for hospital

Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation’s 5-kilometer Poker and Paws Walk begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Olympic Place Retirement Community, 20909 Olympic Place.

Walkers are encouraged to get pledges from donors, in addition to the $20 entry fee. Proceeds will help the hospital.

People are encouraged to bring their dogs on leashes to walk with them. Each walker will get a playing card at five stations along the way. The people with the best poker hands can win prizes.

Bothell

Cascadia offers new biz degree

Cascadia Community College is offering a new two-year Associate in Business degree this fall.

The degree is designed to prepare graduates to transfer to a B.A. program at a four-year college, including the University of Washington, Bothell, which shares a campus with Cascadia.

Business administration is one of three programs at UW Bothell participating in the new dual enrollment program with Cascadia.

Edmonds

Chamber gives to the Red Cross

The Greater Edmonds Chamber of Commerce will contribute $1,000 to the American Red Cross to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina and other hurricanes in the United States this year.

The chamber also has established a matching fund program of up to an additional $1,000 for donations received from chamber members before Nov. 1.

Katrina relief effort in Everett

World Gym offers a fundraiser for the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Fund from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 8130 Evergreen Way.

There will be entertainment, a car wash, celebrities and games.

Church to help hurricane victims

The Interfaith Association of Snohomish County and the Greater Everett Ministerium offer a service for those affected by Hurricane Katrina at 5 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 2936 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.

It will be followed at 6 p.m. by a celebration featuring food, entertainment and New Orleans-style dancing.

There will be activities for people of all ages. Admission is free.

Donations will be distributed by United Way of Snohomish County and the Snohomish County chapter of the American Red Cross.

Island County

Coupeville gets new councilman

The Coupeville Town Council has sworn in its newest member, Jim Phay.

Earlier, Phay faced an election opponent, Breian Montana, to replace Councilman Joe Keeba, who resigned this summer. Montana later dropped out of the race, saying he had not known that Phay was going to run and that Phay was better qualified.

Given the lack of an opponent, the Town Council decided to swear in Phay early.

Lake Stevens

School district opens courses

Lake Stevens School District is offering more than 30 classes to the public, from baby-sitting basics to bicycle maintenance, basketball and ballroom dancing.

There also are courses in computer skills, French, dog obedience, cooking, home decorating, health, finances, and sports and fitness.

Retirement event set for Saturday

The Lake Stevens Fire Department will host a public reception to recognize the 16 years of service of Capt. Mike Peters, who is retiring.

176th Street SW rebuilding done

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Monday will mark completion of $2 million in safety improvements to 176th Street SW. The event will take place in the parking lot of the Lynnwood Church of the Nazarene, 5326 176th St. SW.

Curbs, gutters, sidewalks and bicycle lanes were added to the street.

Marysville

Skate to benefit Katrina relief

The Marysville Skate Inn plans a Hurricane Katrina relief fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the skating rink, 7313 44th Ave. NE. The event will include skate games and races.

Proceeds will be donated to Christa Ministries World Concern’s Katrina Effort. The nondenominational organization is based in Seattle.

Inn general manager Nancy Volper also urged people to donate pet food and new teddy bears or other stuffed animals, which will be turned over to the American Red Cross.

Restaurant hosts disaster benefits

Desiree and Curry Smythe, owners of the Village Restaurant, will conduct two benefits for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Desiree Smythe lived in New Orleans for 10 years. She came to America from Sri Lanka, and the couple were on vacation in Sri Lanka in December when coastal areas were devastated by the tsunami. They were on the beach and had to race to the third floor of a hotel to escape the flooding.

“We know what it’s like,” she said.

The restaurant will donate all proceeds from its pie sales on Sunday and 50 percent of the restaurant proceeds on Monday. The donation will be split between the American Red Cross and the Assembly of God Disaster Relief Fund.

The restaurant is at 220 Ash Ave.

Monroe

Hospital guild will raise funds

The Valley General Hospital Guild, 14701 179th Ave. SE, hosts Karen’s Karat, a fundraising event, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

Items on sale include gold, silver and scarves. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the guild.

Mukilteo

YMCA plans party for young teens

The YMCA of Snohomish County will host a Teen Scene kickoff party from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Mukilteo Family YMCA and skate park, 10601 47th Place W.

All middle-school teens in Snohomish County are invited.

Activities will include music, break dancing, salsa lessons, swimming, karaoke, skating, a live band, air hockey, door prizes, free food and an appearance by Squatch, the Seattle SuperSonics mascot.

Snohomish

Listen and play at flute circle

Downtown Snohomish will host the Cedartree Flute Circle from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Wired and Unplugged Internet Coffeehouse, 717 First St.

There will be a 45-minute documentary film on American Indian flutes and the presentation of new flutes for a new raffle. The raffle will benefit the Sarvey Wildlife Center in Arlington.

Those who own flutes are encouraged to bring them and play along. Flute lessons are available by donation.

Center to have annual bazaar

The Snohomish Senior Center will host its annual bazaar and auction from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1 at St. Michaels Church, 1514 Pine Ave.

In addition to bazaar gift and craft items, there will be a silent auction of goods and services, a bake sale, vendors, a raffle for three quilts, lunch, doughnuts and coffee. Proceeds will benefit the senior center.

Stanwood

New stoplight gets green light

A new stoplight will be installed this week at the intersection of 267th Street NW and 72nd Avenue NW to accommodate traffic at a new Bartell’s drugstore scheduled to open Oct. 1. The stoplight won’t be operational until later in the month.

Traffic engineers are trying to time the light to reduce backups onto Highway 532 nearby.

Camano medic deal approved

The City Council has approved a new contract with Camano Island Fire and Rescue for administrative services and training for the city’s fire department.

The contract calls for Stanwood to pay Camano Island Fire and Rescue $72,000 a year through 2011.

Earlier this year, the city also contracted with the Camano department for emergency medical services. That contract calls for annual payments of up to $499,000, also through 2011, although the city can recover some of those costs with transport fees.

Sultan

Book and media sale at library

The Sultan Public Library will have a fall book and media sale from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 8 at 319 Main St.

Featured items include children’s picture books, nonfiction and fiction books, paperbacks and magazines. Some CDs, cassettes and videos also will be on sale.

Tulalip

Tribes donate to the Red Cross

The Tulalip Tribes have donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The tribes hosted a blues barbecue and concert Sept. 11 at the Tulalip Amphitheatre, and the proceeds, along with a matching grant from the tribe, provided the donation.

“Our culture and traditions say we need to take care of our brothers and sisters,” tribal general manager Linda Jones said. “And we would hope, should the need arise, others would do the same for us.”
