LAKEWOOD – And they’re off.

Sultan never looked back as Josh Mann took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown to spark the Turks’ 37-14 Cascade Conference victory over host Lakewood Friday night.

Mann scored the first 14 points of the game, notching Sultan’s second touchdown on an 8-yard run. Mann then ran in the conversion to put Sultan (1-0 league, 3-1 overall) up 14-0 early in the second quarter.

Sultan, 1-5, 3-7 last year, has already matched last year’s win total. The Turks have made up a lot of ground on Lakewood, which was 5-1, 9-2 last year.

The Cougars’ Anthony Wiederkehr scored Lakewood’s first eight points in the second quarter. Wiederkehr scored on a 31-yard run around the right side then caught the 2-point conversion from Danny Borisov to bring Lakewood (0-1, 1-3) within six points at the half 14-8.
