Monroe pitcher finally yields an earned run

Published 9:00 pm Monday, April 3, 2006

MONROE – It was bound to happen sometime this season. A Monroe pitcher finally gave up an earned run.

The Bearcats (5-0 in league, 9-0 overall) combined a big third inning with their usual near flawless mound work to defeat the Cascade Bruins (3-1, 5-2) 7-1, in a battle of Wesco North unbeatens at Monroe’s Park Place Monday afternoon.

It was another dominating performance by senior fireballer Ashly Forsberg, who fanned a dozen Cascade batters, walked two and scattered four singles to improve her record to 6-0.

The aforementioned earned run scored in the Cascade fourth. Brandi Klemm and Sara Shaw singled, and with one out, a Bruin walk loaded the bases. A wild pitch brought Klemm home with the sole Bruin run, the first earned run allowed this year by a Bearcat pitcher in 59 innings of work. Forsberg proceeded to strike out the next two batters to end the inning.

“Ashly came off the mound and told me ‘That was enough of that,’” said Monroe head coach Curt Eskeback.

On a soggy, drizzly afternoon, Monroe struggled in the first two innings, stranding five runners before breaking out for a six-spot in the third.

“The second time around the lineup we made some adjustments and came up with some key hits,” Eskeback said.

The Bearcats spread the offense around as five hitters had two hits: Brittany Burry, Jordan Birch, Jamie Holmes, Briar Stanley and Sarah Elledge.

Meanwhile, Forsberg’s ERA jumped from 0.00 to a still-microscopic 0.17.
