Schools FYI

Published 9:00 pm Monday, August 7, 2006

The Lake Stevens School District community is invited to help decide on a name for the new junior high school under construction atop Cavalero Hill off 20th and 79th streets SE.

The “mid high” school will initially house eighth- and ninth-graders when it opens in 2007. It eventually will become the district’s second high school.

Under district policies, schools must be named for:

* Persons who have attained national or local prominence;

* Past U.S. presidents or Washington national senators or representatives;

* Area names of historical significance;

* Directional names; or

* Geographic characteristics of the school area.

Directional names and broad regional names are preferred for secondary schools.

Send suggestions to Arlene Hulten, community relations director, at 425-335-1501 or arlene_hulten@lkstevens.wednet.edu. Or visit www.lkstevens.wednet.edu.

A committee will review suggestions Aug. 16, then give a recommendation to the school board in September.

The percentage of paid lunches was 42 percent, up from 39 percent the year before.
