Indonesia’s largest carrier, PT Garuda Indonesia, plans to order 25 of Boeing’s 737-800s, according to reports published today (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=conewsstory&refer=conews&tkr=BA:US&sid=a1jJ8qAO2Oew). The deal is worth $1.87 billion at catalog prices. Garuda’s president told reporters the airline would start receiving the Renton-built planes in 2009.

Air safety in Indonesia has been called into question recently following several deadly crashes, including the one earlier this month in which 21 passengers died (more than 100 survived) when a Garuda operated 737 overshot the runway. The order would come as a welcome boost to Boeing’s 737 backlog. The company has won 9 orders for its single aisle jets so far this year while Airbus has roped in more than 100 requests for its A320s. Although Airbus is upping production rates on its single aisle line, Boeing won’t respond in kind unless the company feels comfortable with an increase, Boeing’s Scott Carson told the Wall Street Journal in an article published today.

Also in the news this morning, the president of Emirates plans to visit Airbus next week to help determine whether the Dubai-based airline will order up to 100 A350 XWBs or Boeing 787s.
