Everett Community College students Rogelie Rael and June Dolder were honored March 22 by Gov. Chris Gregoire as members of the Washington All-Academic Team. The two are among 62 team members from the state’s 34 community and technical colleges. The award honors outstanding students who have a demonstrated commitment to success in the classroom and in the communities where they live.
Each will receive a $750 scholarship funded by the Northwest Education Loan Association and KeyBank, and are eligible for additional scholarships at Washington colleges and universities. Rael, 21, is a journalism major. Dolder, 44, is studying to become a nutritionist.

Three students from Cascade High School in Everett have received full-ride scholarships for a year of secondary studies in Germany through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program.
Chelsea Ongaro, Angela Null and Kate Shepherd are among 250 American students who will live with host families as they study during Germany’s “13th year” of high school, deferring their freshman year of college by one year. Ongaro plans to later attend Tufts University in Boston; Shepherd plans to attend either Lehigh University or Lafayette College, both in Pennsylvania; and Null plans to attend New York University.
Everett High School senior Nathan Olson, 17, has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference on U.S. Policy and Politics this summer at American University in Washington, D.C. The 10-day leadership program includes college-level lectures, trips and tours. Students will simulate careers in their areas of interest, such as stepping into the shoes of a U.S. senator.
A sixth-grade team from Shelton View Elementary School in Bothell finished second in state at the recent middle-level Washington State Math Championship held March 31 in Blaine. More than 1,300 students from 100 schools competed. Shelton View team members are Jahaan Ansari, Simon Barbe, Marcus Bintz and Kevin Jin.
Other students from the Northshore School District also finished well. Shelton View sixth-grader Lucy Dong placed fifth in the state in the individual competition. The sixth-grade teams from Bear Creek Elementary School in Woodinville won two trophies, finishing 12th and 14th. The fifth-grade team from Woodmoor Elementary School in Bothell placed eighth, as did the eighth-grade team from Northshore Junior High School. In the eighth-grade individual competition, Kenmore Junior High School eighth-grader Kevin Dong placed fourth in the state and Northshore Junior High School seventh-grader Yota Kato placed fifth.
Cascade High School senior Eric Buerk won first place in the junior and senior category in the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center’s Creative Writing Contest.
Buerk will receive a $400 savings bond. He also was recognized at a special ceremony on Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 15 in Mercer Island. Students each year are given a question they must respond to in the form of an essay, poem, play or short story.
This year’s question was, “How do your decisions affect people around you?” Buerk is in history teacher Kevin Rohrich’s semester class on the Holocaust. This is the first time a student from the class has won the contest, which this year received more than 800 entries from more than 70 schools.

Local winners have been announced for the 2007 Washington Award for Vocational Excellence, which recognizes students who excel in career and technical education.
Winners receive a grant for two years of undergraduate educational expenses. Winners were:

Robotics teams from Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe finished in the bottom half of the more than 100 competitors from around the world at the 2007 FIRST Vex Challenge World Championship Event held April 12 and 13 in Atlanta. The eight students took first place at the first-ever FIRST Vex Challenge state tournament.
Tom Ryan, a teacher at Valley View Middle School in Snohomish, was named the Washington Industrial Technology Association’s 2007 Teacher of the Year.
