Fly-In event free for vets

Veterans are offered free admission to the Arlington Fly-In on Sunday as part of Veterans Appreciation Day.

The fly-in is held at the Arlington Municipal Airport.

Belly-flop contest at Yost Pool

A belly-flop and cannonball contest at Yost Pool is being planned for this week by Edmonds Parks and Recreation.

The contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the pool at 9535 Bowdoin Way.

Island County

Outdoor first-aid training planned

The Island County chapter of the American Red Cross is planning a 16-hour Wilderness First Aid course.

The class is scheduled to meet from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 21. The class costs $85 and includes materials.

This course is intended for those who work, live or play in remote areas away from the usual EMS services.

Lake Stevens

‘Teddy Bear Picnics’ planned

The Lake Stevens Family Center offers a “Teddy Bear Picnic” today and every Thursday through August.

The events are planned for 11 a.m. to noon at North Cove Park, behind City Hall at 1812 Main St.

Parents and their children in third grade or younger are invited to bring their favorite doll or stuffed animal for an interactive book reading, craft or activity related to the story. A light snack will be included.

Marysville

Cartooning class for teens, seniors

Marysville Parks and Recreation is offering a cartooning workshop for teens and seniors.

The three-week workshop is set to meet from noon to 2 p.m. July 31 through Aug. 14 at the Ken Baxter Senior-Community Center, 514 Delta Ave.

The event covers the basics of cartooning, such as character development, story lines and jokes.

Mill Creek

Summer camp open for kids

Parents can register their preschool-aged children for a morning summer camp offered by Mill Creek Parks &Recreation.

The Preschool Pals camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon July 24-27 in the community room at Mill Creek City Hall at 15728 Main St. Children who participate must be toilet trained and be between 3 and 5 years old. The fee is $70 for city residents and $80 for nonresidents.

Instructors are planning hands-on activities involving math, reading, writing, music, drama and fitness.

Japanese students still need hosts

Four more host families are needed to house Japanese exchange students from the city of Kagoshima who are set to be in Snohomish County from July 22 to Aug. 10.

The 14 students plan to study English at Advent Lutheran Church at 4306 132nd St. SE in Mill Creek.

Participating families are encouraged to not change their daily routines for their students. Classes and activities for the students are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, leaving evenings and weekends for them to spend with their host families.

As a reward, families that take part in the host program will receive three tickets to the Seattle Mariners’ Aug. 5 home game against the Boston Red Sox.

Monroe

Monroe opens online school

A new statewide online public high school will be hosted by the Monroe School District.

Washington Virtual Academies already has an online program for 1,500 students in kindergarten to eighth grade. The new school will offer courses online through the same system, operated by a Virginia-based private company called K12 Inc.

Students have until Sept. 2 to enroll for fall semester. Classes begin soon after.

Monroe district teachers will lead the online courses. Students must meet academic and attendance requirements, including state testing standards for graduation.

Mukilteo

Children invited to library carnival

A children’s carnival is being planned for later this month at the Mukilteo Library.

The carnival is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 26 at the library at 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.

The event is expected to feature a bounce house, music, crafts, stories and visits from two local mascots – Community Transit’s Oxy Gene and Popfly of the Everett Aquasox.

Event raises money for festival

Snohomish TOP Food &Drug raised $1,900 for Kla Ha Ya Days at a community barbecue on July 6. The event was to celebrate the store’s renovation.

Stanwood

Tomb raiding at library today

A program titled “What it Took to be a Mummy” is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at the Stanwood Library.

The event is geared toward kids 6 and older and includes games and activities on archaeology and exploration.
