Stanwood High to get new fitness center in fall

Stanwood High School will open a new fitness center in November to meet the health and fitness needs of students and to meet a lack of existing PE teaching space.

The fitness center will be in a new portable classroom and will include cardiovascular and weight-training equipment.

Students will develop fitness goals, write personal fitness plans and track their progress using new fitness monitoring systems.

High school health and fitness teachers designed the fitness center and its curriculum to align with state academic standards.

Students will learn about lifting techniques, muscle groups, safety and equipment use, the relationship between fitness and nutrition, how to develop a healthy body image, the importance of warming up and stretching, and how to develop their own personal fitness monitoring system

A grant through the Northwest Educational Service District 189 paid for time for the teaching staff to discuss curriculum ideas and buy equipment and supplies for the program.

The first two years of the grant improved health and fitness programs at the elementary and middle school levels. This year, the grant will pay for a portion of equipment at the high school.

North Middle School gets the gift of music

The estate of Linda Fisher, a former Everett School District teacher and principal, has donated a grand piano valued at more than $10,000 to the North Middle School music program.

Fisher worked for the district from 1973 to 2000.

She taught at Emerson, Silver Lake and Lowell elementary schools. She also was the principal at Jackson Elementary School for 10 years and at Garfield Elementary for one year.

Sky Valley seeks local volunteers for fall classes

Sky Valley Community Schools, sponsored by Monroe Public Schools, is looking for local residents to share their interests and skills with others in the community.

Volunteers don’t have to have a teaching certificate or teaching experience. All that is required is an interest or skill to share with others.

Fall quarter doesn’t begin until Oct. 1and runs through Nov. 30.

Instructors’ forms with the class description and dates are needed by Aug. 3 so staff can prepare a flyer that is sent to about 27,000 homes.

Classes are offered in the evenings Monday through Thursday. Instructors can teach a one-night class or a class that has several sessions. Instructors pick the dates and times that work with their schedules.

The registration fee varies based on type, length and size of the class and is determined using a district approved formula. Most instructors receive 60 percent of the registration.
