Day two recap

Published 7:19 pm Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Here’s the report from tonight’s scrimmage. A lot more goals as Green wins 9-8, prevailing in a shootout. The increase in goals may have something to do with the fact there was less hitting than in Monday’s game. Jonathan Harty sat out tonight, so that may have something to do with the decrease in physical play. Gabriel Minville played for the first time in main camp, with Lewis Laczko switching from Green to Grey for tonight’s game. Here’s the scoring summary:

First Half (Mitchell David in goal for Green, Kent Simpson for Grey)

Green 1-0: Eric English scores on a penalty shot, putting in his own rebound

Grey 1-1: Kyle Beach scores on a penalty shot, picking out the top-right corner.

Grey 2-1: Matt Ius scores on a penalty shot with a move to his backhand.

Green 2-2: Nice play in transition, Taylor Ellington to Carter Smith to Brandon Campos for the finish.

Grey 3-2: Tyler Eskesen holds off his defender and scores with a backhander.

Grey 4-2: Minville scores on a penalty shot, picking out the top-left corner.

Green 3-4: Brennan Sonne picks up a loose puck while crossing the crease and scores on the backhand

Grey 5-3: Ius snipes a one-time wrister in from the right slot.

Green 4-5: Vitali Karamnov puts in a rebound on Green’s third attempt.

Green 5-5: Nice play off the rush, Dane Crowley feeding a pass to the middle for Ty Skauge to sweep into the far corner.

Second half (David Reekie in goal for Green, Shayne Barrie for Grey)

Grey 6-5: Someone blows a shot past Reekie before I even have a chance to look up for the start of the period. I think it might have been Lukas Vartovnik, but Jesse Burt and Ius were also out there.

Grey 7-5: Markus McCrae tips in a Matt Strong shot from the point.

Green 6-7: An onrushing English bungles in a rebound from a Brett Chartier shot in transition.

Grey 8-6: Campos scores on a nice feed from Paul Grenier after a bad bounce off the back boards.

Green 7-8: Ellington gets to a puck in the slot and wrists a bullet past Barrie.

Green 8-8: Smith puts a wrister from the slot in off the underside of the crossbar.

Reekie made a pair of fantastic saves on Burt and Beach during the final shift to preserve the tie.

Green won the shootout 2-0 when Ondrej Fiala scored five-hole and Sonne actually went to his backhand to score instead of his usual move to the five-hole.

There was one little tussle as Ellington and Beach dropped the gloves, though it was more of a wrestling match with no real punches thrown.

Some other observations:

– Coach John Becanic mentioned he wanted his defensemen to get involved more offensively, and Crowley and Ellington have really taken that to heart. Both skated the puck up the ice aggressively all night, often carrying it deep into the offensive zone in ann attempt to create.

– Some of the 1990-born players who looked a little nervous Monday were visibly more comfortable tonight, most notably Strong and Eskesen.

And to answer reader P.M. Clark’s question, veterans Jesse Smyke and Damir Alic are not attending camp. Because’s of Everett’s abundance of potential overagers they were released during the offseason.
