Karon Leigh is a new member of the Lowell Art Works Studio Artists Group and will be showing some of her new work in an exhibit of mixed media pieces called “Unconscious Landscapes.”

An opening reception is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Lowell Art Works &FortNight Gallery, 5205 S. Second Ave., Everett. The exhibit runs through Sept. 29.

Leigh creates bold yet dreamlike landscape images in an abstract and expressionistic style.

Lovely as a tree: Trees are a common theme in the work of painter Stephany Vogel, who uses her artwork, with the help of trees, to figure out complicated thoughts, emotions and experiences.

The Edmonds Arts Commission is presenting an exhibit of Vogel’s large acrylic paintings through Oct. 15 in the Brackett Room on the third floor of Edmonds City Hall, 121 Fifth Ave. N., Edmonds.

For Vogel, trees are a symbol of strength as well as joy. For instance, the painting “Apple Tree” is of an ancient apple tree that stood in front of her husband’s family homestead. He grew up with that tree, and both of her children played in it many times. When his parents died, and the house was sold, the tree was chopped down. The painting, for Vogel, was a way to remember that tree and those times.
