Edmonds: Folk group taking new members
The Northwest Scottish Fiddlers, a regional folk music group, has reformed under an Edmonds musician and is looking for new members.
The group is led by Calum MacKinnon, an Edmonds man who retired from Boeing to pursue the art of playing the fiddle for Scottish events and dances. In May, the Northwest Scottish Fiddlers played at the Folklife Festival in Seattle.
The nonprofit group meets once a month in members’ homes. The group also sponsors workshops.

Lynnwood: $2,000 for college foundation
The Edmonds Community College Foundation has received a $2,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Edmonds’ scholarship committee.
Anne Cassidy, the foundation’s executive director, was recently given a check from Warren Bradbury, the Rotary Club’s committee chairman. The donation is expected to benefit the college’s endowed scholarship fund.
For this academic year, the foundation has received enough revenue through donations and investments to give out more than $204,000 in scholarships ranging from $2,800 to $1,000 to about 190 students. The foundation also plans to give $53,000 in grants to 29 college programs.
Maltby: Boy Scouts retire U.S. flags
Boy Scout Troop 53 of Monroe and Troop 39 of Maltby are set to conduct a flag retirement ceremony at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Maltby Community Park, 20322 Broadway Ave., Snohomish.
The Scouts will retire several U.S. flags and replace the flag at the park. The replacement flag was donated by Quadrant Homes of Bellevue. The public is welcome to attend.
Mill Creek: Council to discuss Eastgate plan
The groundwork for a new retail development similar to the Mill Creek Town Center is expected to be discussed during a City Council study session.
The study session is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hal, 15728 Main St.
City planners want to see the development built on a strip of land along 132nd Street SE, east of 35th Avenue SE and west of Seattle Hill Road. They envision a mix of businesses and housing, integrated with surrounding neighborhoods.
A new road may be built through the site — where a Wal-Mart is being planned — possibly with traffic signals on 132nd Street SE and Seattle Hill Road.
Storefronts at Eastgate Way would face inward toward the road, like at the Mill Creek Town Center.
Before anything can happen, the city must amend its comprehensive plan and add a zoning that allows for mixed-use growth. The site is currently zoned for commercial business.
Monroe: Hearing on annexation set
The commissioners of Snohomish County Fire District 3 are set to hold a public hearing on annexing a 20-acre parcel into the district at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at 163 Village Court.
The parcel is in the Mount Forest Boulevard area in Monroe. Anyone is welcome to the hearing. The fire district covers the city of Monroe and its surrounding area.
