Boeing locks in 747-8 design

The Boeing Co. has finalized the basic design of its 747-8 Intercontinental passenger plane.
“We have designed the 747-8 Intercontinental to be the ideal airplane for serving the 400- to 500-seat market between the 777 and the A380,” said Michael Teal, deputy chief project engineer for the 747 program, in a press release.
Boeing’s 747-8 will seat 467 passengers in three-class configuration. Compared to Boeing’s 747-400, the Intercontinental has been stretched 18.3 feet but will be 16 percent more fuel efficient.
Since its launch, the passenger plane has won the backing of only one airline: Germany’s Lufthansa.
