D-Day

D-Day as in David Reekie Decision Day.
Today’s the day Reekie came off the 60-day injured list. The Tips were unable to pull off a deal for the overage goaltender, so he was placed on waivers this morning. From now until 10 a.m. tomorrow he can be claimed by any team in the WHL. Should no team claim him, he’s free to join another league, including the OHL and QMJHL.
Reekie was the unfortunate victim of circumstance. According to Everett general manager Doug Soetaert, the Tips had a deal worked out for Reekie the day he was diagnosed with mononucleosis. However, the other team pulled out, unwilling to wait until Reekie had recovered.
Now will another team in the league put a claim on Reekie? He’s certainly a good enough goalie to play in the WHL, and he’s probably better than many of the No. 1s out there. However, he’s also an overager, meaning most teams would have to release a player in order to add Reekie, and it’s unlikely a team would want to burn an overager spot on a backup goalie. And taking a look around the league, it’s hard to find a place where there’s an opening for a No. 1.
So we’ll see what transpires in the next 24 hours. Hopefully something works out for Reekie as he did a great job last season for the Tips, he played his role as Leland Irving’s backup without complaint despite being the starter in Regina the year before, and he was a popular player in the locker room.
