Machias Elementary finds reading treasure

“Ahoy, me hearties!”

That’s the greeting students and staff of Machias Elementary School heard over the intercom every morning in October during the school’s “Reading Month,” which focused on the theme “Treasure Your Time with Books” and featured a treasure hunt with a treasure map of the school.

Students read at home to earn pieces to their class treasure map. At school, they participated in “Famous First Lines,” a piratey family reading night, and a character dress-up day that featured storybook pirates.

Visitors shared their reading expertise, including author and illustrator Rebecca Dickinson from Snohomish and other local residents who contributed their talents and interests as guest readers.

“Treasure Your Time with Books” reading month culminated on Nov. 2 with students using their maps to find their treasure, said Lynne Charlot, Machias Elementary School librarian. The loot was distributed by the Seafair Pirates. Classes gathered in the school library to meet the pirates, hear a story read aloud by the pirates, and receive their share of the goods.
