50 years ago (1957)
De Vere J. “Jerry” Burtenshaw, a resident of the Monte Cristo Hotel, recently completed six months of active duty with the Air Force. A 1956 graduate of Washington State College, he was resuming the managership of the Alpine Cafeteria.
Starting tomorrow at the Roxy was a film starring Elvis Presley at his greatest. He was singing, fighting, dancing and romancing in “Jailhouse Rock,” which included seven new songs. Free Elvis photos would be given to the first 300 admissions. The second feature was “Tarzan and the Lost Safari.”
25 years ago (1982)
George Winn, executive vice president of the John Fluke Manufacturing Co. since July, was appointed president and chief operating officer, the company announced. Winn’s appointment filled a position vacant since the July resignation of John Zevenberger. The Everett-based electronics firm also announced the appointment of John Fluke Jr. as vice chairman of the board. In a third appointment, George Trickell was named vice president of personnel and employee relations.
Steve Christian of Everett took part in a three-day conference by the Agriculture-Forestry Education Foundation at Central Washington University in Ellensburg the previous week. He was one of 30 people involved in a two-year series of workshop sponsored by the foundation.
