Red-light camera study gets a green

The Everett City Council voted Wednesday to hire Scottsdale, Ariz.-based American Traffic Solutions Inc. to study red-light violations at several intersections in Everett for one month.

The study should be completed by Jan. 31.

American Traffic Solutions is a leading provider of traffic systems that trigger cameras when a driver runs a red light or doesn’t stop completely for a right-hand turn on a red.

The city set aside money for red-light cameras in its 2007 budget.

Police in Lynnwood have sent out thousands of tickets since the city installed red-light cameras earlier this year. Mountlake Terrace is also looking into the technology.

Lake Stevens: City OKs 2008 budget

Lake Stevens has approved its budget for 2008.

The City Council approved the $17.2 million budget Monday. The budget includes a $4.5 million low-interest loan from the state to go toward a planned new $72 million sewage treatment plant.

The $6.4 million general fund increased by about $300,000 from 2007 and includes money for two new public works employees, a code enforcement officer and $100,000 for sidewalks.

The city will raise its portion of property taxes by 1 percent next year to help pay for the increases.

Mukilteo: Rosehill ballot is finalized

Voters in Mukilteo will be asked in February whether they’d rather renovate the historic Rosehill Community Center or replace the building with a new community center.

The Mukilteo City Council finalized the language of the upcoming ballot measure at its meeting this week.

The measure will state that renovation would be cheaper than building a new building, and that neither option would require an increase in taxes.

The city’s plans to renovate would cost between $13 million and $15.3 million, and the city’s plan to build a new community center would cost an estimated $16.2 million.
