Pearce earns all-American honors

Jack Pearce earned All-American honors as he finished 12th in the midget (11- and 12-year-old) boys race at the USA Track &Field National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships on Dec. 8.

The race took place at Kansas University’s famed Rim Rock Farm cross country course. Pearce, a 12-year-old from Brier, covered the icy 3,000-meter (1.86 mile) course in 10 minutes, 52.59 seconds.

In the early going Pearce was in the middle of the pack of 268 runners that toed the starting line as temperatures hovered in the low 20s with a wind chill in the single digits. He quickly began moving through the field, and had moved into the top 20 as the runners reached the first of two covered bridges on the course. He continued to move up, using uphills to pass runners, before reaching the finish line 12th.

This is the third straight year Pearce has earned All-American honors. He runs for the Seattle-based Rain City Flyers.

E-W senior signs with UW rowing

Edmonds-Woodway’s Erin Lauber has signed a letter of intent to row for the University of Washington.

Lauber comes to the UW with a strong family background in Husky rowing. Both of Lauber’s parents were rowers at UW, and her mother Madeline was the team captain of the 1981 squad. Off the water, Lauber has received numerous accolades in both volleyball and basketball. Lauber also rowed for Green Lake Crew during the summer.

“Our first priority in recruiting is to sign all of the best available athletes in our region – both rowers and Olympic sport athletes.” Coach Bob Ernst says. “We are well on our way to accomplishing that goal.”
