STANWOOD – A Stanwood man, 63, was hit by a train this morning, officials said.

The man was hit by an Amtrak train just before 9:30 a.m. at the 271st Street NW crossing, according to Stanwood police.

He was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital with serious head injuries.

Initial reports indicate the man received a glancing blow from the train, said Gus Melonas, a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe spokesman.

The 271st Street crossing has signal lights and crossing arms, Melonas said.

The train, traveling from Bellingham to Portland, Ore., had 49 passengers aboard and was delayed about 90 minutes, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.

Amtrak, Stanwood police and Snohomish County sheriff’s detectives are investigating.
