The labor union that represents Boeing Co. engineers is gearing up for contract negotiations with Spirit AeroSystems, a key supplier for Boeing’s 787 jet. The aerospace company also builds the 737 fuselage section and 747, 767 and 777 forward cab pieces for Boeing.

The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace represents more than 24,000 workers nationwide, with nearly 3,000 of those at Spirit. The union and Spirit begin contract talks in the June to July timeframe.

SPEEA has launched a video on its Web site with the hopes of bringing in new members at Spirit and making existing members aware of the impending contract.

Noteworthy at SPEEA, the union’s new director, Ray Goforth, started work this week. The labor group had been without an executive director since July. Also adding some continuity to the union after months of leadership chaos, SPEEA’s president, Cynthia Cole, and secretary, Bill Hartig, will not face opponents in board elections this spring. Both automatically will serve new two-year terms.
