50 years ago (1958)

Teachers were always on the lookout for ideas to stimulate their students’ interest. At Washington School, Mary Beselin had accomplished this goal with a skit that increased students’ interest in outer space. The players were Ronnie Isaacs, Carol Hatcher, Doreen Lesmerster and Diane Heath.

Coach John R. Leighton, a Paine Field employee and air reservist, gave instructions to Johnny Walker and Wayne Alkire, students at Monroe School, who played for the Indians in the Chick Berry fifth-grade kids’ hoop league. The Everett Jaycees and Union 76 Club funded the league.

25 years ago (1983)

Honored for seven years of service to children on the Luther Child Center board were Jim Perin, former police chief and now with Frontier Bank, and the Rev. Neal Snider of Bellingham. They retired after two terms on the center’s board of directors, the maximum under the center’s bylaws.

A plan allowing people to pay for an overnight stay and a meal in a historic Snohomish home was set for a public hearing. City Councilman Paul Shinoda, who suggested the plan, said travelers were beginning to look for something other than the motel experience.
