Everett

Reading room to be named for librarian

Recently retired Everett library director Mark Nesse is scheduled to be the honored guest at a naming ceremony for Everett Library’s reading room at 7 p.m. Friday at the library, 2702 Hoyt Ave.

Nesse was the director for 30 years until his retirement last year.

Author, former Seattle librarian and reading advocate Nancy Pearl speaks on “The Pleasures and Perils of a Life of Reading,” sponsored by the Friends of the Everett Public Library.

Admission is a $5 donation to the Greater Everett Community Foundation.

Donation forms are at the library. Donations can also be mailed directly to the Greater Everett Community Foundation at P.O. Box 5549, Everett, WA 98206.

Espresso Americano, the library’s coffee shop, provides refreshments.

Mukilteo

New council member ready to be seated

A local community activist who was recently named to the Mukilteo City Council is scheduled to be sworn in at Tuesday’s meeting.

Richard Emery, 60, replaces former city councilman Marko Liias, who resigned from his city position in January after his appointment to the state Legislature.

This week’s City Council meeting is 7 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall at 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

Emery, who has lobbied to preserve Mukilteo’s Japanese Gulch as open space, was one of 10 people who applied to fill Liias’ seat.

His term expires Dec. 31, 2009.

Snohomish

Businesses invited to purchase sign space

The city is accepting applications from businesses that want to be included on city-sponsored directional signs. Businesses on Avenues A, B and C are invited to purchase display space on the signs, which the city will install along First Street.

The cost is $150 for the first year and $75 for each following year.
