Lunar eclipse starts at 5:43 p.m.

Tonight is the last total lunar eclipse until December 2010. Mike Lynch, author of “Washington Starwatch,” says it should be quite a show tonight.

The eclipse begins at 5:43 p.m. and will be completely over by 9:09 p.m.

Lunar eclipses occur when the moon, in its orbit around the Earth, passes through the Earth’s shadow opposite the sun.

This happens only during a full moon, when our planet lies in a line between the sun and the moon. But this doesn’t occur every time there’s a full moon because the moon’s orbit around the Earth is tilted by 5 degrees to the Earth’s orbit around the sun.

From 7:01 to 7:51, the moon will be totally eclipsed but still visible. It could take on a bright orange or blood red color.

Class offers foster parent information

About 1,200 Snohomish County children are part of the foster care system.

A training class offering potential foster parents information about the commitment is set for 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Compass Health Therapeutic Foster Care, 4526 Federal Ave., Building 4 W, Everett.

Talent needed for summer concerts

The city of Marysville is looking for musical talent for its annual Sounds of Summer concert series.

The concerts are planned for mid-July through mid-August at Comeford Park and Jennings Memorial Park.

Miller annexation gets hearing

A public hearing on the proposed Miller annexation is scheduled for 7 tonight at a Granite Falls City Council meeting at City Hall, 206 S. Granite Ave.

The area proposed for addition to Granite Falls is at the northeast end of the city.

Correction

A trail planned in Marysville from 88th Street NE to Soper Hill Road is expected to cost $740,000. A story that ran on Page B1 Tuesday ran an incorrect total for the project.
