Outdoor movies in Marysville

MARYSVILLE — This summer, there will be a new way in town to watch movies.

A portable 16-by-9-foot movie screen is being donated to the city of Marysville, making possible the city’s first-ever outdoor movie series, Popcorn in the Parks. The series is planned for June to September of this year.

“It’s evolved from the 16 millimeter on the side of the barn,” city parks director Jim Ballew said.

The CineBox screen system, which retails for $12,995, was donated by the Snohomish- Camano Island Board of Realtors.

The screen is designed to be viewed by up to 250 people. The self-illuminating screen comes with a built-in DVD player, speakers and other components connected to a custom case.

The Popcorn in the Parks series is scheduled to run Saturdays from June 7 to Sept. 13 in nine city parks. The series is part of the city’s planned Passport to Parks program, in which young people get a “passport” stamped when they visit a city park, which makes them eligible for prizes.

“We’re just trying to get people out and get to know their parks,” city spokesman Doug Buell said. He said the program also ties in with the city’s Healthy Communities program, which encourages physical activity.

The city doesn’t yet have the movie screen, Ballew said. The City Council voted last week to accept the gift of the screen from the real estate agents.
