50 years ago (1958)
Penny Sheehan, a senior at Everett High School, smiled widely as Superior Court Judge Charles Denney presented the citizenship essay trophy to her. Judge Denney was one of the contest judges. Sheehan won the overall trophy and a clock-radio as well in the Jaycee-sponsored contest. Susan Berger was junior class winner and Arlene Maltsberger was for the sophomore class.
“Off the Track” was the play being performed by the Sultan Union High School junior class. It was directed by faculty adviser Mary Clemens assisted by student Joy Wallace. Pat Turner and Gene Price starred.
25 years ago (1958)
The site of a former Snohomish Thriftway Market was expected to become a post office this fall. Postmaster Ralph Link said a 10-year lease had been signed with Skotdal Enterprises of Everett for a 13,776-square-foot building at the Snohomish Square Shopping Center near 13th Street and Avenue D.
The first baby born to James and Sally Ann Bedker of Marysville really hit the numbers. Little James II was born on his dad’s 24th birthday on March 12 at 12:12 p.m. at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. It was the same hospital where his dad was born.
