Food bank in need
In January, the Sky Valley Food Bank gave out enough food for 28,000 meals. In March, the meal number zoomed to 36,500.
They really had to stretch.
Donations are down so far this year by more than 12,000 pounds.
If you can donate food — or cash so they can buy in bulk — visit the bank from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays, at Sky River Parkway in Monroe.
Or mail that lovely green stuff to P.O. Box 724, Monroe, WA 98272.

Talk about the good old railroads
The Snohomish Railfans meeting is 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hilton Lake Fire Station, 3525 108th St. SE in Everett.
Railroad enthusiasts are invited to view slide shows and videos by local rail fans.
Victim’s Advocates receive money
The Washington Coalition of Crime Victim Advocates was selected from our state to receive money from the Office for Victims of Crime.
This money comes from the federal Crime Victims Fund, created under the U.S. Victims of Crime Act of 1984. The fund is made up entirely of criminal fines and other penalties paid by federal criminal offenders, not by U.S. taxpayers.
This week is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

Learn to identify Northwest trees
Tree expert Stephen Arno will give a free talk and slide show at 7 p.m. Wednesday about identifying Northwest trees.
His book, “Northwest Trees: Identifying and Understanding the Region’s Native Trees,” covers Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Canada and identifies and illustrates more than 60 species of wild Northwest trees by shape, size, needles, leaves, cones or seeds.
Arno holds a doctorate from the University of Montana and is a retired U.S. Forest Service research forester and forest fire ecologist.
His talk is at the Everett Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave.
Correction
Retired Osceola County sheriff’s deputy Ron Kelley said he questioned whether Randy Privrasky’s alleged speeding on March 28 warranted a police pursuit. A story about the pursuit and Privrasky’s death on Page A1 Monday misstated Kelley’s position.
