Everett grad on Nicklaus watch list

Western Washington University golfer Jake Koppenberg was one of 18 NCAA Division II players named this month to the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Jack Nicklaus watch list.
The Nicklaus Award is presented annually to the top golfer in each NCAA division.
As of last week, Koppenberg, a graduate of Everett High School, ranked seventh nationally among Division II players with a 70.9 scoring average. He had placed among the top 10 in medalist play in six of the Vikings’ eight tournament this season, including four top-three finishes.
Koppenberg currently ranks second in Division II nationally in par-5 scoring with a 4.56 average, and leads the division in subpar strokes per round (4.72).
A transfer from the University of Idaho, Koppenberg has been honored as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s golfer of the week three times this season.
Basketball
Eighth-graders win Catholic youth title: The eighth-grade girls basketball team from Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Everett recently won the Catholic Youth Organization Division AAA Basketball Championship in the Seattle Archdiocese.
Team members included Ellie Wicklund, Annie Schmidt, Nicole Rohlinger, Savannah McIver, Ellie Hoban, Kelly Gould, Karoline Brodie, Kristina Bride, Jody Barhanovich and Tierney Bagley. They were coached by Shawn Hoban, Karen Barhanovich and Randy Wicklund.
Immaculate Conception Players also were named winners of the Francine Veith Sportsmanship award. The winners were selected by their teammates. Honored were fourth-graders Ben Morgan, Jon Sisneros and Addison Schmidt; fifth-graders Zach Weber, Scott Rohlinger, Audrey Metcalf and Madelyn Hoban; sixth-graders Nolan Heisel and Maggie Keaty; seventh-graders Ross Rhone, Christopher Boe and Janie Lucas; and eighth-graders Tim Dobson, James Kussy and Ellie Hoban.
Softball
Hudson earns sixth league honor: Central Michigan University senior third baseman Amy Hudson was named the Mid-American Conference West Division softball player of the week for April 7-13.
It marks the sixth time in her college career that Hudson has earned the honor.
Hudson, an Everett High School graduate, batted .533 (8-for-15) with six runs batted in in CMU’s four games during the week. She had a double, a home run and five runs scored.
She also moved into a tie for seventh on CMU’s career home run list with 11, and into 10th place on the school’s career RBI list with 80.
