EVERETT — Northbound I-5 is scheduled to be closed in south Everett overnight late Saturday and early Sunday morning as crews install signs and do other work to wrap up recent freeway improvements.

Another closure is planned for the following Saturday, May 10, on the southbound side.

This week’s northbound closure is scheduled to begin at 11:59 p.m. Saturday at 128th Street SW, extending to Highway 526. One lane is scheduled to reopen at 7 a.m. Sunday, and all four lanes are expected to reopen by noon.

Signs will detour drivers to Highway 527 and Highway 526.

The southbound closure is scheduled for 11:59 p.m. May 10 beginning at the exit to Highway 527 at the Everett Mall, extending to 128th Street SE. Crews will open one lane at 7 a.m. May 11, and all lanes are expected to open by 10 a.m. Signs will direct drivers to Highway 527 and 128th Street SE.

In addition to installing signs, crews plan to do more work on the new park-and-ride lot being built at I-5 and 112th Street SE; remove platforms used to work on bridges earlier in the project, and if weather permits, paint stripes for carpool lanes.

“That way we won’t have to do more closures later,” state DOT spokeswoman Patty Michaud said.

These closures are unrelated to several ramp closures planned for downtown Everett beginning at 8 p.m. Friday and running through 5 a.m. Monday.

All of the work is part of a $263 million project to widen I-5 with additional lanes and make other freeway improvements. Crews plan to have all lanes and ramps open to traffic by June.
