PREP ROUNDUP: Shorecrest advances with shootout win

SUMNER — After regulation and overtime ended in a 2-2 tie, Shorecrest goalie Andrew McDonald was able to stop the first shootout attempt by Auburn Riverside, enabling the Scots to take a 3-2 win in a Class 3A first-round boys soccer state playoff game Tuesday at Sunset Chev Stadium.

The save proved to be critical since Auburn Riverside made the next four attempts, but the fifth kicker of Shorecrest, Mickey Crudo, sent the ball past the goalie to give Shorecrest the 5-4 shootout advantage.

Crudo scored the first goal of the game in the 38th minute when he sent a free kick towards the Auburn Riverside goal from 30 yards out on the right side. The line drive kick deflected off a defender’s ankle and into Auburn Riverside’s goal.

Auburn Riverside scored two goals in a six minute span in the second half, taking a 2-1 lead but Josh Rudnick of Shorecrest was able to tie the score on a breakaway goal in the 79th minute.

DeWaele that tied it in the first half, but rose to the occasion in the shootout. He dove to his right once, and left twice, to stop shots.
