50 years ago (1958)
Everett-on-the-Mall opened this morning and would continue through today and tomorrow. From Everett Avenue to Wall Street with the exception of the intersections, traffic was blocked on Colby Avenue so shoppers would view displays, watch entertainment and jaywalk to their heart’s content.
Robert Borden, versatile Everett Junior College music student, was going over the score of his choral composition “Chimera,” which was to be sung by the College Choraliers at the EJC Festival of Song in Civic Auditorium. Borden also sang, directed and played in the band.
25 years ago (1983)
A dairy queen in Stanwood traditionally meant a milk-touting royal daughter from a local farm. But that tradition was ending with the arrival of Dairy Queen in a town that had no fast-food restaurants to date. It was not hard to find customers at Helen’s Kitchen, the Farmette or Mr. O’s ready to talk about the new DQ.
Air Force Maj. Craig A. Bernard of Stanwood was awarded the meritorious service medal for superior performance of duty while serving with a tactical fighter wing at Bitburg Air Base, Germany. He was at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.
